Ketohydrazone dyes derived from 4-morpholino-2-naphthol and ortho-substituted anilines: Further examination of the hyperchromism induced by the 4-morpholino-2-naphthol moiety

A series of ketohydrazone dyes has been synthesised from 4-morpholino-2-naphthol and ortho -substituted anilines by conventional diazotisation coupling chemistry. Whilst the new, dull orange-red, exhibit only a minor variation absorption maxima across range substituents, they are hyperchromic relative to Sudan 1 their none analogue. Protonation selected dye examples results in bathochromic shift afford vibrant purple-coloured protonated species. • new have synthesised. The orange shades with narrow maxima. more intense colouring (hyperchromic) non-ortho substituted λ max .

There are two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(21)H(21)NO(2), which was synthesized by the one-pot reaction of 2-naphthol, morpholine and benzaldehyde. The dihedral angles between the naphthalene ring systems and the benzene rings are 84.03 (7) and 75.76 (8)° in the two mol-ecules and an intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond occurs in each independent mol-ecule.

The title compound, C(9)H(10)N(2)O(2)S, was obtained from the treatment of ethyl 4-cyano-3-hydr-oxy-5-morpholinothio-phene-2-carboxyl-ate with concentrated HCl. The mean plane of the essentially planar dihydro-thio-phene ring is almost orthogonal to the mirror plane of the N-morpholine substituent, making a dihedral angle of 87.2 (2)°.

The title compound, C(11)H(9)NO(2), was prepared by a condens-ation reaction of 2-hydr-oxy-1-naphthaldehyde with hydroxyl-ammonium chloride in refluxing ethanol. An intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond is observed. In the crystal structure, inter-molecular O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen-bond inter-actions result in a two-dimensional network.
